Backstory:
Neko Demi-humans, often referred to as “Catfolk”, are a fascinating sub-species within the broader Feline Demi-Human group. They embody many traits commonly associated with their feline counterparts—agility, independence, and a keen sense of curiosity. Nekos have been an integral part of Aelyndra’s history for as long as most can remember, their culture and society evolving alongside other demi-human races.

Independence is a defining characteristic of Neko society. Most Neko individuals, particularly males, tend to lead solitary lives, thriving on their ability to navigate the world on their own terms. This has naturally led many of them into roles that suit their lone-wolf nature. In guilds across Aelyndra, Nekos are highly prized for their stealth and agility, making them exceptional assassins, scouts, and thieves. Their natural ability to move silently and strike with precision makes them some of the most feared and respected figures in these professions. In some cases, entire guilds or factions have been composed almost entirely of Neko members, with their reputation for secrecy and cunning making them legendary.

Physically, Nekos are among the most agile and dexterous of all the demi-human races. Their lithe bodies and heightened reflexes allow them to perform feats of acrobatics that are nearly impossible for others. This agility, combined with their sharp senses and night vision, gives them a significant advantage in both combat and everyday life. Although they may not possess the raw strength of an Oni or the magical prowess of an Elf, their speed and cunning make them formidable opponents. Neko warriors are known to dart in and out of combat, delivering precise strikes before their enemies can react. This hit-and-run style of fighting has made them invaluable in skirmishes and guerrilla warfare.

Despite their natural inclination toward independence, Nekos have a deep capacity for forming strong social bonds. Once a Neko finds a mate or someone they genuinely care for, their behavior undergoes a significant transformation. They become fiercely loyal, to the point of being protective, and will go to great lengths to ensure the safety and happiness of their chosen companion. This trait is especially prevalent among Neko women, who often seek out meaningful connections with others. In many cases, a Neko woman working in a brothel or pleasure quarter will develop a deep attachment to a patron. Once this bond is formed, it is nearly unbreakable, with the Neko dedicating herself to her chosen companion for life.

A well-known story tells of a young human male who visited a brothel and spent time with a charming Neko girl. After their encounter, the Neko girl became emotionally attached to him, deciding he was her mate. Though he did not initially return her affections, she remained devoted, eventually becoming his second wife and maid when he later fell in love with another Neko girl. This tale illustrates the intensity of a Neko’s loyalty and their ability to form lifelong attachments. Neko women who form such bonds will often follow their chosen companions wherever they go, offering unwavering support and affection.

Intimacy & Relationships:
Intimacy with a Neko is not just about reproduction; it is seen as the ultimate expression of love and devotion. Nekos are known to be incredibly affectionate with their mates, often displaying a level of intimacy and attachment that can be overwhelming for other races. Neko women, in particular, tend to be very "clingy" in private, seeking to breed with their companions as often as possible. This behavior is most pronounced during periods of heat, when a Neko’s desire for intimacy can become almost insatiable. In some cases, this desire can be so strong that a Neko woman may attempt to initiate mating in public, though this is generally discouraged by the public.

The intense bond that forms between a Neko and their mate is not without its challenges. Once a Neko becomes attached, they will often want to spend every moment with their companion, which can lead to feelings of suffocation or overwhelm for those unaccustomed to such attention. However, for those who understand and appreciate the depth of a Neko’s love, this bond can be incredibly rewarding. The loyalty and devotion of a Neko are unmatched, and those who are lucky enough to earn their affection are often considered blessed.

In modern times, Nekos continue to be respected and admired for their unique qualities, though they are not without their challenges. Their independent nature can sometimes lead to difficulties in forming alliances or working as part of a team, particularly in environments where collaboration is key. However, those who take the time to understand and earn the trust of a Neko will find them to be invaluable allies and lifelong friends.

Despite their strong sense of independence, there has been a growing trend among younger Neko generations to seek out community and companionship, challenging the traditional view of Nekos as solitary beings. This shift has led to the formation of communities and guilds where Neko members support and uplift one another, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual respect. As these communities continue to grow and evolve, the Neko race is likely to play an increasingly prominent role in the social and cultural landscape of Aelyndra.
