S1 - Chapter 4
Shortly after parting ways with Yukari, Akame and Kurohime loosened up a bit, sharing more during their trek. The conversation inevitably turned to Suzuran, and Kurohime's genuine fondness for Akame’s sister was evident. "Your sister Suzuran is fantastic! I really like her," she declared.

Akame's initial reaction was a wary look, a flicker of suspicion that Kurohime might be harboring ulterior motives.

"No, no, not like that!" Kurohime flustered, her panic clear. "It's a little sister connection. Now I understand why she's so precious to you."

Their conversation about Suzuran continued into the next day as they pressed on towards the Iron Legions. The following afternoon, they encountered another female adventurer stationed by the path.
As they drew closer, a surge of hatred flared within Kurohime, perceptible even to Akame. Her features hardened. While not pure, unbridled rage, the shift in her expression was undeniable. Akame recognized the woman as another dragon, similar to Kurohime, yet their auras differed vastly. This woman's aura held a familiarity, closer to that of a typical dragon. Perhaps, unlike Kurohime, she wasn't from hell.

"Easy there, Kurohime," Akame murmured calmly before they were within earshot. "I can practically feel that anger radiating off you."

Startled by Akame's keen perception, Kurohime swiftly calmed her features, regaining her composure.
The woman finally met their gaze, rising to greet them. "Didn't expect any travelers on this path. I figured the guild would have sent out a warning already."

"What's the issue with this path?" Akame inquired.

"Actually, I'm on a guild hunt request," the woman explained. "Something's been picking off merchants and adventurers in this area. Apparently, there have been reports of undead activity following the attacks. Sounds like a potential lich to me."

A tense silence fell as Kurohime focused, searching for any unusual magical signatures.

"Sense anything?" Akame asked, piecing together the situation.

"No necrotic presence nearby," Kurohime confirmed. "Whatever it is, it's likely not here at the moment."

The woman, struck by the realization that Kurohime was also a dragon, perked up with excitement. "A fellow dragon! Haven't seen many of our kind lately!" she exclaimed. "Ember's the name. Pleasure to meet you. Are you all traveling through here I assume? Mind If I join you for the day retracing the reports?” She extended a hand towards Kurohime in greeting.

Kurohime hesitated to shake Ember’s hand but went ahead reluctantly.
“That's fine with us,” Akame quickly answered for Kurohime.

The trio continued their journey northeast, following the designated path. Ember, brimming with questions, peppered Kurohime with inquiries about her origins, probing her about Draconia and if she had escaped from there.

"I wasn't a resident of Draconia, nor did I escape from there." Kurohime stated firmly, her voice strained under the barrage of questions.

"How? Aren't all dragons from Draconia?" Ember pressed, genuinely bewildered. "The reason we fled was because of that mind-controlling cult they have running the show. Crazy religious fanatics."

Akame sensed Kurohime's simmering anger threatening to boil over. This was a side of Kurohime she hadn't witnessed before. It sparked intrigue in Akame, who desperately wanted to understand the source of this sudden animosity.

"Ember," Akame interjected smoothly, "we're both rather weary from our travels. We came all the way from the capital."

Ember's eyes widened in surprise. "Wow, that is quite a trek! So, the Iron Legions are your destination, then? On this path, that's where the reports of this lich seems to be concentrated," Ember continued, "up until the forest clearing that marks Legion territory, and what brings you two to Legion territory?" Ember inquired.

"Looking for a friend," Akame offered cryptically.

"Ah, well, I wish you all the best in your search," Ember said sincerely.

As dusk painted the sky, they settled into a small clearing for the night. Kurohime took charge of setting up camp, while Akame and Ember gathered firewood and other necessities.

Once settled, Ember offered a proper introduction. "Now that we're comfortable, I'm Ember, an A-Rank adventurer."

Akame reciprocated. "We haven't introduced ourselves either. I'm Akame, and this is my companion, Kurohime."

Ember acknowledged them with a nod.

Akame joined Ember by the fire. "Ember, you mentioned escaping Draconia. Did your family come with you?"

Ember confirmed with a nod. "My parents and little sister. We managed to escape, and right now, we live in the woods near the Draconian border."

"You live in a home on the outskirts of Draconia? That's impressive," Akame remarked. "The money you earn adventuring goes back to your family, I presume?"

"Absolutely," Ember replied. "It's been two years since we escaped."

Akame pressed on, intrigued by Ember's rapid rise. "That's remarkable. Were you placed at A-Rank when you joined the guild, or did you climb the ranks quickly?"

"I started at C-Rank but rose to A-Rank within a year," Ember explained.

"And your sister? Is she an adventurer too?" Akame inquired further.

Ember chuckled. "Maybe if she could resist sleeping all day. But she's strong, just like me. Our grandfather drilled her and me awake for training every dawn when we were younger."

"What's her name, in case we ever cross paths with someone like that?" Akame asked.

"Crystal," Ember replied. "It's been a year and a half since I last saw her. I hope she's doing alright."

Their conversation delved into Ember's current work and more about Crystal as the night deepened. Suddenly, a flurry of noises erupted around them. Akame and Kurohime rose, their movements fluid. Ember followed suit, grasping her firestone-engraved lance.

"Didn't pick up anything approaching. Kurohime, any magic on your end?" Akame inquired calmly.

Kurohime focused on sensing magic like before. "I detect a necrotic aura now."

"Sounds like a potential lich then, if it's ambushing us this smoothly," Ember concluded, readying herself for a fight.

The commotion coalesced into a single direction. The trio peered into the forest, where shadowy figures emerged from the darkness, illuminated by the flickering campfire. At least a dozen reanimated skeletons lumbered towards them, with more undoubtedly following.

Akame sighed, a hint of exasperation in her voice. "Can't we just have one peaceful night? I was hoping for some quiet time."

Ember glanced at Akame, impressed by her collected demeanor. It was clear Akame wasn't fazed by the approaching undead. Her gaze then shifted to Kurohime, whose scythe materialized from a wisp of black mist conjured at her fingertips.

Kurohime, too, appeared unperturbed. Ember, the only one visibly concerned, gripped her weapon tighter, prepared to defend the group. But it seemed her intervention wouldn't be necessary.
A fiery glint ignited in Ember's eyes. "Looks like you two could have this under control," she declared, a predatory grin spreading across her face. "Mind if I take the lead and unleash some fire on these undead fiends? It's been a while since I've cut loose."

Akame and Kurohime, sensing the burning desire in Ember's eyes, readily agreed, nodding their assent. Ember turned towards the approaching skeletons, a fierce smirk replacing her grin. "Let's burn some undead trash!" she roared, her voice resonating with a warrior's fervor.

Ember's body crackled with power, erupting in a fiery aura that illuminated the entire clearing and pushed back the encroaching darkness. Her firestone lance blazed to life, casting an inferno around it. The light pierced deep into the forest, revealing the mastermind behind the undead horde, a cloaked figure clutching a staff, its skeletal visage a grotesque mask of death.

"There you are, lich!" Ember roared, her voice booming.

With a battle cry, she launched herself into the fray. A blur of fire streaked through the skeletal ranks, leaving a trail of smoldering ash in its wake. The undead crumbled before her onslaught, their unholy forms dissolving into dust. Ember pressed forward, closing the distance to the lich. The skeletal monstrosity unleashed a barrage of necrotic bolts, but they dissipated harmlessly against Ember's fiery aura. Undeterred, the lich summoned its guardians, two hulking undead ogres lumbered forth, their fetid stench filling the air.

Ember's fury intensified. Flames erupted from her lance, transforming it into a swirling inferno of orange and blue. With a powerful leap, she slammed the lance into the ground. A surge of fire erupted, a fiery tendril lancing out from the point of impact, splitting the earth beneath the ogres. The flames danced and writhed, consuming the undead giants in an instant inferno. The flames swirled, forming a fiery vortex before dissipating, leaving no trace of the ogres behind. Unfazed, the lich conjured a necrotic shield, a dark barrier halting Ember's fiery advance. A tense struggle ensued, Ember straining every fiber of her being to pierce the shield.

Akame and Kurohime, witnessing the awe-inspiring display of power, cleared the remaining skeletons with practiced efficiency. Despite their focus on the undead, they couldn't help but be impressed by Ember's raw, untamed power.

Just then, Ember let out a primal scream. Flames erupted from her back and tailbone, coalescing into magnificent wings and a powerful tail. The flames subsided, revealing Ember’s true wings and tail. They emanated heat that Akame and Kurohime could feel even from a distance.

Now empowered, Ember unleashed a final, earth-shattering push against the shield. The necrotic barrier shattered, and the lich's lower half erupted in flames. The top half, still animate but severed from its lower body, flailed uselessly on the ground.

"I have to admit," Kurohime muttered, a hint of grudging respect in her voice. "For a fire dragon, she's impressive."

Akame glanced over at Kurohime thinking to herself. "So, that's the source of your animosity? Because she's a fire dragon?"

Ember's momentum carried her past the lich, a trail of fire marking her path. The flames ignited the surrounding trees, transforming them into grotesque pillars of fire. The earth itself scorched, the scene resembling a demonic inferno.

A wave of shock washed over Kurohime. Memories flooded back, vivid and horrifying. Images of a devastating attack on her homeland, her kingdom engulfed in flames. In her mind's eye, she saw Ember causing the fiery assault, but her trauma twisted the memory, replacing Ember with the monstrous fire dragon who had orchestrated the destruction.

Ember reveled in her victory, her laughter echoing through the flames as she approached the lich's smoldering remains. Akame, recognizing the dawning horror in Kurohime's eyes, vanished in a blur of movement.

Suddenly, a fierce gust of wind swept through the clearing, extinguishing the flames in an instant. Ember shielded her eyes, disoriented by the sudden change. As she lowered her arm, she saw Akame, blade buried deep in the lich's skull.

Ember, still bewildered by Akame's sudden intervention, finally composed herself. Akame gestured towards Kurohime, whose entire demeanor had shifted. Fear radiated from her.

Ember swiftly extinguished the remaining flames on her lance and herself. Her wings and tail, momentarily engulfed in flames, vanished completely as she walked over and knelt beside Kurohime who was trembling. She placed a gentle hand on Kurohime's shoulder. Kurohime, her face buried in her hands, flinched at the touch. But as she looked up, meeting Ember's concerned gaze, a flicker of calmness returned to her eyes.

"I'm alright now," Kurohime mumbled, slowly rising to her feet.

"I’m sorry, Kurohime," Ember offered sincerely.

"No, there's nothing to apologize for," Kurohime insisted, though her voice lacked conviction.

Ember's brow furrowed. "Is it because I'm a fire dragon?" she inquired, a hint of worry in her voice.

Kurohime remained silent, her gaze falling away. This was all the confirmation Ember needed.

"Like I said, I'm sorry," Ember repeated, only to be interrupted.

"There's nothing to apologize for," Kurohime reiterated, her voice strained.

With a heavy sigh, Kurohime retreated back to camp, gathering her bedroll and settling down for the night.
"The necrotic aura has dissipated entirely," she announced, her voice flat, devoid of her usual emotion.

Akame, confirming the lich's demise with a deep breath, approached Ember. Placing a comforting hand on her shoulder, she offered, "I'll take the first watch. Get some rest, Ember."

Akame then made her way to Kurohime, checking in on her. Ember followed suit, unfurling her bedroll on the opposite side of the campfire, granting Kurohime the space she clearly needed.

Later that night, Kurohime stirred awake. Drawn to the soft glow of the campfire, she saw Akame polishing her katana. Kurohime rose from her bedroll and joined Akame by the fire. Silence hung heavy between them for a while, until finally, Akame broke the tension.
"Are you alright, Kurohime? You had me worried." Her voice held genuine concern as she met Kurohime's gaze.

"Yes, I am now, thank you," Kurohime replied, her voice regaining its strength.

"I won't pry into things you're not comfortable sharing," Akame assured her, "but know that I'm here if you ever need someone to listen."

Kurohime released a heavy sigh. "While what I told you before wasn't exactly a lie, it wasn't the whole story either. Now seems like a good time to come clean."

Surprised by Kurohime's sudden openness, Akame put away her katana and scooted closer. She cast a discreet glance towards Ember, ensuring she was still asleep before continuing the conversation.

"You already know I'm a dragon from hell," Kurohime began, "and that 18 years ago, my home was attacked, separating me from my sisters. But here's the truth, Akame, and please keep this between us. No one else needs to know for now."

Akame nodded solemnly, her lips forming a silent promise.

"My home was the Kingdom of Cindermaw," Kurohime revealed. "I ruled as their queen for over a decade. Then, on the tenth year of my reign, we were attacked. A monstrous fire dragon, it spoke, and called itself Ignis."

Akame's hand twitched reflexively, a flicker of recognition crossing her eyes at the name "Ignis." It was gone as quickly as it appeared, replaced by her usual expression, she listened intently as Kurohime continued her tale.

"Before my kingdom fell," Kurohime recounted, her voice filled with emotion, "I managed to get my sisters to safety through a hidden tunnel network. It led them to the outskirts of our territory, to our aunt's house. There, they could access a surface portal."

"A portal to the surface?" Akame echoed, surprise coloring her voice. "That's…unheard of.”

Kurohime nodded grimly. "My clan stumbled upon it by chance, centuries ago. It was deemed too unstable for regular use, so we kept it hidden. Until the day of the attack." Tears welled up in her eyes. "I was naive, Akame. I believed I could face Ignis, that my strength was enough. But he… he was a force of nature. He tossed me aside like a ragdoll. All I could do was watch as he rained fire upon my kingdom, listen to the screams of my people… Those screams echoed in my mind for years, even after I reached the surface."
Her voice trembled. "Seeing Ember unleash her power… the flames, the way she devastated the area… it triggered those memories. It wasn't her fault, of course."

Akame watched Kurohime with a newfound understanding. Rising to her feet, she crossed the distance and offered Kurohime a comforting hug, a gesture usually reserved for her sister.

Kurohime, initially taken aback, accepted the embrace. Tears streamed down her face as she allowed herself a moment of vulnerability, clinging to Akame's warmth. Akame held her close, patting her head soothingly.

The next morning, as the first rays of dawn painted the sky, Ember was already up, tending to a fire and preparing breakfast. Akame slept in a bit later, the previous night's events taking their toll. Kurohime, packing her belongings, was approached by Ember.

"Kurohime, I wanted to apologize again," Ember began, but Kurohime cut her off once again.

"Ember, please," she said gently. "There's nothing to apologize for. You didn't know."

"Is there anything I can do to make you feel better?" Ember persisted, her brow furrowed in concern.

Kurohime offered a small smile. "How about this? If you're ever looking for a guild, you're welcome to visit ours. We dragons are a rare sight, and we should stick together, wouldn't you agree?"

Ember laughed, her lightheartedness returning. "I'll definitely consider it. I should be able to drop by within the next month or two."

To solidify the agreement, they shook hands. A few hours later, Akame finally emerged from her slumber and prepared for their journey. As they said their goodbyes to Ember, who was heading in the opposite direction, Akame couldn't help but tease Kurohime.

"Glad to see you two patched things up," she said, a hint of amusement in her voice.

Kurohime's eyes widened in surprise. "You heard?"

Akame chuckled. "Light sleeper, remember? Especially after our skeleton clean up last night. But enough about that. Let's focus on the road ahead, shall we?"

An hour later, as they crested a hill, a breathtaking vista unfolded before them: the Iron Legion's Great Wall. The colossal structure cast a vast shadow on the clearing ahead, dwarfing everything in its path.

"Wow," Kurohime breathed, awestruck. "That's… incredible."

Akame chuckled. "Second time seeing it, and it still takes my breath away. It encircles the entire Legion territory. Takes about two or three weeks to travel the whole thing."

Kurohime's curiosity piqued. "You've been here before?"

"Yeah," Akame admitted, "years ago, when I first started adventuring. I was searching for Hana. But getting in proved to be a challenge, especially after one of their higher-ups got assassinated. Outsiders weren't exactly welcome back then. They'd chase you out or try to arrest you."

"So you just came and left?" Kurohime asked, puzzled.

"Not exactly," Akame clarified. "I managed to get in, but only explored one of the three clan territories, the brotherhood."

"Three clans?" Kurohime's brow furrowed.

Akame launched into an explanation. "The Iron Legion is actually comprised of three major clans, each ruling its own territory within the walls. The southeast quadrant belongs to the Everforge clan, known for their traditional forging techniques and mastery of crafting high-quality armor and weapons."

"The north is controlled by the Silverwrights," she continued, "masters of intricate metalwork, delicate mechanisms, and magically imbued weapons. Finally, the west belongs to the Molten Brotherhood – they excel in weaponry and technological advancements."

"So you only explored the Molten Brotherhood's territory?" Kurohime asked.

"Right," Akame confirmed. "Back then, I didn't know much about the Legion's internal structure or where Hana might have ended up. Any attempt to question someone, even politely, would've likely escalated into a fight with those hotheads in the Brotherhood." She shrugged. "I put my search on hold, thinking I'd return later. But one thing led to another, and… well, time slipped away."

"At least you're back now," Kurohime offered empathetically.

"Indeed," Akame said.

Finally, they reached the imposing main gate. Gone were the days of strict security; a steady flow of merchants entering and leaving the territory painted a picture of relaxed regulations.
Approaching one of the guards, Akame initiated conversation. "Greetings!" she called out, waving cheerfully.
The guard, a towering high orc, dwarfed both Akame and Kurohime. He eyed them with suspicion.
"What is it, outsiders?" he rumbled, his voice gruff.

"Just confirming," Akame replied politely, "are adventurers welcome these days? We'd like to visit for a few days."

The orc grunted. "Seems so. Thank the Everforge clan for this temporary opening."
"Well, thank you very much!" Akame responded, undeterred by his gruff demeanor. She gestured for Kurohime to follow and entered the gates.
"So, what's the plan now that we're in?" Kurohime asked.
"Let's start by asking around the shops," Akame suggested. "Perhaps someone recognizes Hana's name."
They began their inquiry, visiting various shops along the bustling alleyways. While most shopkeepers and patrons seemed oblivious to the name, a glimmer of hope emerged when a young child, engaged in conversation with Kurohime, suddenly chimed in with recognition.
Kurohime quickly waved down Akame to share the unexpected development. "Akame, this little one seems to recognize Hana's name."

Akame crouched down to the child's level, her voice gentle and warm. "Hello there. Do you know the name Tetsuhana?"

The child tilted their head thoughtfully. "I remember. My grandma used to talk about her sometimes, a few years ago before she passed away. I haven't heard that name since."

A spark of hope ignited in Akame's eyes. "Do you recall where your grandma mentioned seeing this person?"

The child furrowed their brow in concentration. "Not really, but I do remember Grandma saying it was someone from a famous blacksmith shop here in the city."

Akame's face broke into a radiant smile. "Thank you so much, little one. That's incredibly helpful." She reached into her pouch and retrieved a gold coin, flipping it playfully before handing it to the child.

"Wow, thank you, miss!" the child exclaimed, their eyes wide with delight as they ran off down an alleyway.

Kurohime nudged Akame's arm playfully. "Looks like we should have started with the blacksmiths, wouldn't you say? But hey, at least we know Hana's still here."

Akame nodded, a wave of relief washing over her. "Agreed, let's continue."

Starting with the blacksmith shops near the city gate. They meticulously checked each one, disappointment settling in as each inquiry yielded no results. Finally, they stood before the last shop on their list.
Akame took a deep breath and pushed open the door.
A gruff voice boomed from behind a counter overflowing with tools and half-finished metalwork. "If you ain't here to buy somethin', lass, keep movin' along!"

Undeterred, Akame stepped forward. "Actually, I'd like to make a purchase. Your time, to be specific." With flick of her wrist, she sent ten silver coins sailing across the counter.

The owner's gruff demeanor softened as he caught the coins expertly. "Alright, alright, lass. You've got my attention. Ask your question."

"I'm searching for a family of blacksmiths," Akame explained. "Specifically, their daughter Tetsuhana, or perhaps you know her by Hana."

The owner's eyes widened in surprise. "Tetsuhana! Now that's a name I haven't heard in a good long while!"

Akame's heart pounded with anticipation. "You know her?"

"Aye, I know of her," the owner chuckled. "Though, she hasn't gone by that name in quite some time. When she joined the arena, she adopted a nickname given to her by the people – Stormclaw."

"Stormclaw?" Akame repeated, excitement lacing her voice. "What do you mean by champion?"

"For the past decade or so," the owner explained, "she's been dominating the arena tournaments. The reigning champion of the Forgefire Tournament, year after year!"

Akame's eyes sparkled with newfound determination. "Do you know where she might be?"

The owner scratched his chin thoughtfully. "Her family used to live near here, but they moved into Everforge territory a few years back. Can't say where exactly they are now, lass."

"Thank you very much, sir," Akame said, a wave of gratitude washed over her.

With renewed hope, she exited the shop and joined Kurohime. "Looks like we need to shift our focus to the Everforge area, perhaps the arenas themselves," Kurohime suggested.

"Agreed," Akame said, a newfound fire in her eyes. "A demon kitsune woman wouldn't exactly blend in easily. We should find her quickly."

They ventured towards Everforge territory, splitting up to cover more ground. They agreed to meet back at the tavern where they had started their search. A couple of hours later, they reconvened, Kurohime brimming with excitement.

"Akame, I think I found where she lives!" Kurohime announced, her voice triumphant. "One of the arena fighters knew her personally and gets his armor repaired at her father's shop!"

Akame's face lit up with a radiant smile unlike any Kurohime had seen before. "Let's go then!" she exclaimed, a tremor of emotion in her voice.

They set off towards the designated location. As they drew closer, a familiar figure emerged from a building, momentarily halting Akame in her tracks.

"Old man…" she murmured, her voice thick with emotion as she watched the figure, an elderly man, taking delivery of some materials.
He turned to head back inside his shop, and Akame found herself frozen, a storm of conflicting emotions swirling within her. Placing a hand on Akame's shoulder, Kurohime offered gentle encouragement.
"We came all this way, Akame. Don't stop now."

Akame took a shuddering breath, wiping away a stray tear. "I won't," she managed, her voice choked with emotion. "I just… I need a day to collect my thoughts."
This was the first time Kurohime had seen Akame display such vulnerability. They found a nearby inn and settled in for the night. Over dinner, their conversation drifted towards the guild's construction.

"If you'd like," Kurohime offered, "I could fly back and check on things when we're ready to leave. It wouldn't take long."

Akame let out a surprised laugh. "I'm not going to lie, it completely slipped my mind that you're a dragon."

Kurohime chuckled. "These horns aren't exactly subtle," she said, gesturing playfully at her head.

"Well, if you wouldn't mind checking on the guild, that would be perfect," Akame admitted. "I may need to… bend the truth a little to convince Hana to join us. Hopefully, Fae has made some headway with the construction."

The following morning, they arrived back at the shop. This time, Kurohime nudged Akame forward with a determined look. "Alright, no more hesitation," she said with a wink. "I'll meet you back at the inn in three days. This might take some time, and I wouldn't want to intrude on a reunion."

With a warm smile, Kurohime headed back to the inn, leaving Akame alone. Approaching the shop, Akame could hear muffled voices coming from inside.

"Father," a woman's voice grumbled, filled with frustration, "if the kingdom would just hire me, this skirmish with the neighboring kingdom would be settled quickly. They think an arena fighter doesn't have what it takes on the battlefield? Those stuck-up soldiers! No matter how many times I smash them in the arena, they still think they're better because they have 'battle' experience."

Akame entered the front door as the shop bell chimed. The old man Akame saw earlier turned around and suddenly an emotion of recognition and surprise filled his face.

"Well, well, well," he chuckled, his voice warm with delight. "Look who the wind blew in! What a fine young woman we have here."
A younger woman stood beside him, her back to the door. Akame's heart pounded in her chest as the woman turned, her eyes widening in disbelief.

"Akame?!" she shrieked, emotions flooding her face. In a blur of motion, she vaulted over the counter and engulfed Akame in a crushing hug. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she cried out, "It really is you!"
Akame returned the hug. "It's been a long time, hasn't it, Hana?" she said softly, brushing strands of hair from Hana's tear-filled eyes.

The morning rush passed as they reconnected. Akame filled Hana and her family in on what happened over the past 13 years. She recounted what happened to their village, the fate of Akame's parents, and how they were forced to move in with Kurami at Opal’s Reach. Akame also spoke of her own journey of self-discovery and how Suzuran only saw her occasionally between long contracts. The reunion was bittersweet, filled with both joy and sorrow.
Akame, reassured everyone that dwelling on the past wouldn't change anything. "We can only focus on the present," she stated, "and I'm so happy to have found some family again."
The conversation shifted to the present. "Hana," Akame began, her voice calm, "I've started a guild, and I'd love for you to join. We already have a solid team, and your skills would be invaluable."
Hana's heart tugged at the thought of reuniting with her old friend. "The idea of being close again is tempting," she admitted, "but I can't just leave my family behind. Plus, the legion is all I've known for years. I want to keep fighting, but Akame, with all due respect, I'm not sure your guild can offer the kind of challenges I crave."
Akame understood. "Completely understandable, Hana. If you're happy here with your family, I wouldn't want to disrupt that. My offer will always stand if you ever change your mind. How about this? Do you need any materials you need to gather? Why don't I join you tomorrow, and we can catch up some more?"
Hana smiled, the warmth reaching her eyes. "Sounds perfect."
The next day, they ventured into the nearby forest outside the Everforge territory gate to collect the materials. Some of the materials they needed were located in dangerous caves known to be inhabited by ferocious creatures.
As they journeyed, Akame regaled Hana with tales of Kurami and Suzuran's current exploits. Suzuran was heading back to Opal’s Reach to visit Kurami to see if she could recruit her.
"I'm glad everyone's doing well, despite the tragedy," Hana said, a touch of sadness in her voice.
"Hana," Akame said reassuringly, "Trust me, there was nothing you could have done in that situation. It could have ended badly for you too."
"But how did you and Suzu escape?" Hana pressed, confused.
Akame's gaze hardened as she looked into the distance, reliving the memory. "I killed them all," she said in a flat tone, devoid of emotion.
Hana recoiled slightly, her eyes widening in shock and concern. Akame's confession hung heavy in the air. Had Akame secretly wished for the deaths of those who attacked their village?
"I wish I could have helped," Hana offered, trying to empathize.
Sensing Hana's turmoil, Akame offered a reassuring smile and a light laugh. "Don't worry about it, Hana," she said, brushing off the weight of her words.
They finally reached a cave and located the materials. As they exited, they were met by a pair of hulking trolls. Hana, eager to showcase her skills to Akame, stepped forward to face them. Just as her arena name suggested she attacked the trolls like a storm with no weapons, only her fists. She was indeed lightning fast but each punch was powerful. Clearly any normal person on the receiving end would be in a dire situation.
They emerged from the cave, victorious after Hana's impressive brawl with the trolls. Her punches and kicks, honed over years of training, connected with satisfying thuds, leaving the lumbering creatures groaning in defeat.
"Look at you, Hana!" Akame exclaimed, amusement coloring her voice. "You've come a long way from the mischievous bully to the 'Stormclaw.”
Just as Hana turned to reply, a blur shot past her. A nue, its multiple heads snapping with deadly intent, lunged for Hana. With lightning reflexes, Hana dodged the attack, urging Akame to stay back. A fierce brawl ensued. Hana landed a few solid punches on the nue, but the beast retaliated with devastating blows, leaving her wounded.
"This isn't good, Akame," Hana panted. "The last thing we need right now is a nue, and I'm not exactly the best matchup for it."

Akame let out a soft chuckle, surprising Hana with her unexpected calmness. As she calmly walked past Hana, unsheathing her katana with practiced ease, Akame declared with unwavering confidence, "Let me show you how much I've grown too."
Hana watched in stunned silence as Akame moved with a deadly grace she had never witnessed before. In a swift, fluid motion that defied logic, Akame dispatched the nue with effortless precision, her katana flashing in a deadly arc that severed all of its heads in one clean slash. The monstrous creature crumpled to the ground, defeated. Hana stood speechless, her eyes wide with awe.
Finally, she managed to stammer, "What rank did you end up getting in the adventurer's guild, Akame?"

Akame sheathed her katana with a sly grin. "S-Rank," she revealed, pulling out her guild tags to solidify her claim.

Hana stared at the S-Rank tag, a mixture of disbelief and admiration washing over her.
Back at the shop, Hana recounted the encounter with the nue and Akame's incredible display of skill to her parents. Their initial surprise quickly turned into excitement at the prospect of reuniting with Akame and potentially joining a prestigious guild.
"It sounds like Akame has done incredibly well for herself," Hana's father remarked, a hint of pride in his voice. "An S-Rank guild is something to be reckoned with."
"And she wants you to join?" her mother chimed in, her eyes sparkling.
Hana nodded, a hesitant smile gracing her lips. "She did, but I don't know..."
Akame, sensing Hana's internal struggle, spoke up. "Hana," she began, "I understand your reservations. Leaving your family and a familiar life is a big decision.
Akame then revealed her trump card. She pulled out a detailed blueprint, unfurling it on the table. "We've built a brand new blacksmith shop at the guild, specifically with you and your family in mind. It's bigger and better equipped than your current shop, and there's a comfortable living space attached."
Hana's eyes widened in surprise. She glanced at her parents, who were beaming with a mixture of excitement and a touch of melancholy at the thought of leaving their established life.
"We can also arrange for regular shipments of materials back to the legion, so you can continue to serve your loyal customers here," Akame added.
Hana's mind raced. This offer presented a compelling opportunity for growth and adventure, a chance to reunite with her childhood friends and build a new life together. More importantly, it gave her family a secure future and a chance to showcase their exceptional skills on a grander scale.
"Akame," Hana began cautiously, her voice trailed off, a playful glint returning to her eyes. "Did you have someone spying on me this entire time? Were they watching us in the forest too?"
Akame, caught off guard by the sudden shift, choked back a laugh. "Let's just say I had a hunch you might be interested in joining the guild, and I wanted to make sure the transition would be smooth for everyone involved."
Hana's playful teasing erupted into full-blown laughter. Her parents joined in, the tension dissolving into a warm, familiar atmosphere.
"Don't talk to me about spying," Akame countered with a devious playful grin on her face. "Should I inform your family about your time spying on Kai?"
Hana's face flushed crimson. "No no no no, you don't have to discuss that at all, it is perfectly fine, I forgive you Akame we don't have to go there at all!" she stammered.
"Hana, I have never seen a more girlish blush from you ever, not even when we were little," Hana's little sister Kaori said, giggling.
"Alright, alright," Hana conceded, wiping a tear from her eye. "Looks like fate has a way of bringing us back together. We accept your offer, Akame. We're ready for a new adventure."
The following days were filled with activity. Hana's family sold their shop to another blacksmith, ensuring a smooth transition. News of their departure spread quickly through Everforge, with many expressing well wishes and a tinge of sadness at seeing their skilled craftsmen leave. As Akame and Hana's caravan approached the main gate, a beautiful figure awaited them. Kurohime was standing there at the main gate.

"Glad you got my message," Akame greeted Kurohime with a smile. "This is Hana."

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Hana," Kurohime said, extending a hand in greeting.

Hana chuckled. "Please, in this group, the only ones who could pull off 'Miss' are probably you and Akame."

Suddenly, a small pebble whizzed through the air, catching Hana squarely on the back of the head. "Hey!" she exclaimed, whirling around to see her sister Kaori sporting a playful pout. "Oh, right, three of us! I almost forgot!"

Akame and Kurohime couldn't help but laugh at Hana's flustered reaction. By the time they reached the campsite where they'd previously encountered Ember, dusk had settled. Deciding to make camp, the group settled in for the night.
Akame pulled Kurohime aside, a touch of worry etched on her face. "Kurohime, would you mind flying back to the guild ahead of us, like you mentioned before? It'll likely take us a couple of weeks to get back."

"Of course" Kurohime replied readily. "I can leave right away, since nightfall will cloak my departure."

They walked together to a secluded clearing in the woods, the very spot where Ember had faced the fearsome lich. The battle had left behind a large, open space.

"Take care, my friend," Akame said, pulling Kurohime into a small hug.

"You too, Akame. See you soon," Kurohime replied, stepping back with a mischievous glint in her eyes.

With a dramatic flourish, black mist erupted from Kurohime's back, solidifying into a pair of magnificent wings. The wings were a striking blend of pitch black and crimson red, mirroring the colors of her lengthy tail. Gazing skyward, Kurohime launched herself into the night with a powerful beat of her wings, disappearing into the darkness.

Akame watched her go, a sigh of relief escaping her lips. "I hope this gamble pays off," she muttered to herself.

Over the next two weeks, Akame and Hana spent their travel time catching up. Hana filled Akame in on what life had been like for her in the Legion after leaving Whisperwind Village. They discussed the work her family had received due to their association with the Legion, crafting weapons and armor commissioned by the military for their skirmishes with the northern kingdom vying for control of the nearby islands. Hana also confessed that she will miss the thrill of arena battles.

"About that, Hana," Akame interjected with a sly grin, "I might have an idea to help fill that void. While there will certainly be plenty of blacksmithing to keep you busy," Akame began, outlining her plan, "I'd love for you to be a part of our recruitment process. It wouldn't necessarily have to be limited to guild recruitment, we could even hire some guards for the village itself, independent of the guild."

“We could even hold a fighting tournament every other month, if you'd be interested in organizing it. I want our new home to be lively, with fun activities for everyone to enjoy." Akame beamed, her gaze fixed on the distant horizon where the guild lay nestled.

Hana's eyes sparkled with interest. "That's a great idea, Akame!” It was clear how seriously she took her role as leader, and Hana couldn't help but see a flicker of the old Akame in her, the same girl who always strived to bring people together and create a sense of community.

"I'll definitely think about it, Akame," Hana replied with a hearty laugh. A comfortable silence settled between them as they rode at the front of the caravan. After a while, Hana decided to break the ice.
"So, any special someone in your life, Akame? Boyfriend, perhaps?" she inquired with a playful grin.
Akame's response was a straightforward "No."

"What about your friend Kurohime? You two seem awfully close," Hana prodded, a hint of amusement in her voice.

Akame offered another firm "No."

"Are you absolutely sure? Seems like she throws a few longing glances your way when you're not looking," Hana teased further.

Akame sighed, a touch of annoyance flickering across her face. "As much as that woman might fantasize about a night with her head in between my legs, it's never going to happen." The thought of Kurohime's suggestive behavior never failed to irritate Akame.

"How did you two even meet?" Hana pressed, her curiosity piqued.

Akame spent the next hour explaining to Hana about their encounter – from their initial meeting at the tavern to their journey to Mahina village, where they met Suzuran, and finally, the decision to establish a guild together. As Hana listened, a wide smile spread across her face.

"You've grown so much, kiddo," Hana remarked, squeezing Akame in a brief side hug. "While neither of us had the childhood we might have wished for, I'm grateful to be reunited with a friend I hold dear. And I'm glad you never gave up on finding me."

Akame returned the hug with a warm smile. Her gaze fell upon a distant cluster of buildings that hadn't been there before. A small village, bustling with activity. In the distance, their destination awaited.

"Wow, Akame! You weren't kidding when you said this place was something special!" Hana exclaimed, her voice brimming with excitement. "I never expected it to be this big!"

"Yeah, I know," Akame admitted, a hint of surprise lacing her own voice. She had envisioned a modest settlement, perhaps just a single building completed. This bustling village far exceeded her expectations. She had only provided Fae with plans for a mansion and a few shops, yet here it was, a thriving community in its own right. As they entered the village, they noticed workers still busy with construction.

"Akame, what's going on?" Hana inquired, confusion creasing her brow. "This place is still under construction, which isn't a bad thing at all, it's amazing! But I thought it was supposed to be finished."

Akame offered a weak smile and a nervous whistle, a telltale sign she was trying to deflect. Hana rolled her eyes, a playful wrestling match clearly on her mind.

Before things could escalate, a familiar voice cut through the air. "Welcome home you two! Glad to see you made it safely," Kurohime greeted them, appearing from around a corner.

"Miss Kurohime! You just got here too?" Hana asked, surprised. She had assumed Kurohime arrived a day or two ahead of them at most.

"Actually, I arrived the day after I left camp," Kurohime replied with a sly grin.

Hana's jaw dropped. "Wait… How? There's no way you could have gotten here that quickly!"

"I'll explain everything later, Hana," Akame interjected before Kurohime could elaborate. "Let's get your family settled in first. Knowing Kaori, she's probably on the verge of strangling your dad after enduring all those dad jokes during the trip." Akame threw a playful glance back at the caravan, where a comical scene unfolded - Kaori desperately trying to escape while her father held her back, mid-dad joke.

Kurohime led the group deeper into the village, until they reached their final destination. As they approached an intersection dominated by the massive mansion Akame assumed was the guild headquarters, a figure emerged from the grand entrance. It was Fae, and she rushed towards them with a warm smile.

"Miss Akame! Welcome back!" Fae exclaimed, extending a friendly greeting. "We're about 70% finished with construction! The blacksmith shop was actually just completed four days ago, thanks to Miss Kurohime's… encouragement."

Hana shot Akame a withering look. "So it wasn't done yet?!" she demanded playfully.

Akame whistled innocently once more. "Technically, it was finished when you arrived," she quipped with a sly grin.

Hana sighed good-naturedly. "No matter how much you've grown or how powerful you are, you still act like the same mischievous Akame from all those years ago." A smile softened her features as laughter bubbled up from within.

"Miss Fae, was it?" Hana addressed her politely. "Would you mind showing me and my family to our new shop and living quarters?"

"Of course! Please follow me," Fae responded eagerly. Leading the way, she navigated them down the left path of the intersection, passing a half-built tavern that promised a lively atmosphere in the future. They turned right onto another path, and there, in full view, stood a magnificent building that left Hana and her family speechless.

"Here you are, Miss Hana!" Fae announced, gesturing towards the impressive structure. "This unique building combines both your shop and living space. The front section is dedicated to your forge and workspace, while the back houses your living quarters." She pointed out each area, explaining its purpose. "Please, feel free to take a look around and make yourselves at home!"

"Miss Fae, you really outdid yourself with this!" Hana exclaimed, stepping into the shop and surveying the space with a critical eye. Reaching towards the first cart behind her, she prepared to unload her own tools.

"There's no need for that, Miss Hana!" Fae interjected with a cheerful smile. "Miss Akame already took care of everything. We have brand new equipment and furniture for everything the building needs, thanks to her foresight."

Hana's jaw dropped. She walked over to the outdoor smithing area, where indeed, a dazzling array of new tools and equipment awaited her. Kaori, who had wandered into the front shop area, let out a surprised gasp – the shelves were already stocked with gear, ready for immediate business.

The back living quarters were equally impressive, fully furnished and comfortable. Akame suddenly appeared beside Hana, a hint of concern softening her features.

"How did you manage all of this, Akame?" Hana asked, her voice thick with emotion. Tears welled up in her eyes, threatening to spill over. Her parents and Kaori mirrored her emotional state.

Akame offered a reassuring smile. "Remember, Hana, I've been adventuring for over eleven years since we left Whisperwind Village. That's a lot of accumulated funds I haven't had much use for, aside from ensuring Kurami and Suzuran had a place to stay and food on the table."

"Both of them are moving here, right?" Hana clarified, a flicker of hope igniting in her eyes.

"We'll have to see what they decide," Akame replied. "There's a chance they might show up together."

Suddenly, Fae approached Akame, tapping her on the shoulder. "Miss Akame, there's actually a significant amount of leftover funds that could be used for the community's benefit."

A warm smile spread across Akame's face. "Fae, your dedication to this project is truly commendable. You decide how the remaining funds are allocated. Consider it a token of my appreciation."

Fae's eyes widened in surprise. "A-are you sure, Miss Akame?"

"Absolutely," Akame confirmed with a nod. "We should give Hana and her family some time to settle in. Hana, please don't hesitate to let me know if you need anything. I'll drop by tomorrow morning."

Hana offered a grateful nod as she directed the workers on where to place her belongings. As Fae and Akame exited the shop, Fae suddenly remembered something.

"Oh, Miss Akame! Your sister has already sent us two new recruits!"

"Already? Are they here now?" Akame inquired, surprised by the news.

"Indeed they are!" Fae confirmed. "Miss Kurohime has them helping with some of the final touches on the guild hall's interior."

Intrigued, Akame and Fae made their way towards the imposing guild mansion. The first floor seemed largely complete. Grand double doors opened into a spacious dining area, with the kitchen situated conveniently to the right. To the left, the planned infirmary was still under construction. Beyond the dining area, Fae explained their plans for a multi-purpose training and barracks room.

The next room they entered was a magnificent library, filled with towering shelves stacked with books. A familiar figure perched on a ladder caught their eye – Yukari, who looked up and beamed as she spotted them.

"Glad to see you've settled in so comfortably, Yukari," Akame greeted her with a warm smile.

"I'm absolutely loving it here already, Akame," Yukari replied enthusiastically. "And Miss Fae here is an absolute delight." She winked playfully at her, who blushed furiously.

"Oh, Miss Yukari, you flatter me too much," Fae stammered, flustered by the compliment. "It's truly an honor to receive such praise from someone as stunning as you."

Yukari giggled, a seductive sound that filled the air. "Fae seems to be coming out of her shell more – maybe soon she'll be joining us in a bit of harmless flirting!"

Their conversation was interrupted by a commotion echoing from the main hall. Akame, Fae, and Yukari walked towards the sound, their curiosity piqued. At the top of the stairs leading to the second floor, they found Kurohime descending, flanked by two oni girls – one red and the other blue. The two girls were clearly engaged in a heated argument, and Kurohime wore an expression of exasperation.

"Who are these lovely ladies, Kurohime?" Akame inquired, amusement dancing in her eyes.

"Meet Scarlet," Kurohime introduced the red oni, gesturing towards her, "and Azure," she added.

"So, tell us about yourselves, ladies," Akame continued, her gaze sweeping over the two oni. "What did you two do before joining our little guild?"

Azure nudged Scarlet with her elbow, a silent encouragement. "I think it's fine to tell her, Scarlet," Azure said.

Scarlet cleared her throat. "We were both assassins," she stated, a hint of pride in her voice, "part of the assassin's guild here in Valralor that was disbanded."

Yukari perked up at this, her interest piqued. Akame, noticing the shift in her attention, sent Yukari a knowing look. "Assassin's, huh," Akame acknowledged, then gestured towards Yukari. "Yukari here might be interested in talking with you both later."
Yukari offered a curt nod.

Suddenly, both Scarlet and Azure's eyes widened in surprise. "Wait... Yukari?" they exclaimed in unison. "The legendary Yukari? The guild's famous previous leader?"

Yukari offered a small smile, confirming their suspicions. Both oni girls practically vibrated with excitement.

"Miss Yuzuki will be excited to hear about Miss Yukari!" Azure exclaimed.

"Who is this Yuzuki?" Akame inquired, her brow furrowing slightly.

"Yuzuki was our instructor at the assassin's guild," Azure explained. "She was also one of the 'hands' of the previous guild leader."

Recognition dawned on Yukari's face. "I remember seeing that name when we were there, Akame. I think some of the documents mentioned they were going to kill her."

Scarlet continued, "Miss Yuzuki found out about the plot and ended up… killing anyone who sided with Mr. Cassian, including Mr. Cassian himself."

Yukari let out a sigh of relief. "Good to know at least one of my good hearted children still follows my teachings. I'd love to meet her someday."

"Where is Yuzuki now?" Akame asked, her curiosity piqued.

Scarlet hesitated, her cheeks flushing a faint red. Before she could stammer out a response, Azure blurted it out. "Miss Yuzuki is… traveling with Miss Suzuran. I think they... like each other."

Akame and Kurohime exchanged surprised glances. This revelation sparked a new wave of interest in Akame's eyes. "Well, I certainly hope Yuzuki isn't taking advantage of my little sister," Akame said, a hint of protectiveness lacing her voice.

Both Azure and Scarlet paled, their previous bravado replaced by comical panic. "Your sister?!" they shrieked in unison, their gazes darting between Akame and each other. "Why didn't we put two and two together when we heard her name?!" Azure hissed in a panicked whisper at Scarlet.

Akame raised an eyebrow, her stern gaze settling on them. "How did this even happen? Suzuran doesn't take to people easily. Tell me everything about what happened between them."

Thus began a lengthy explanation from Azure. She recounted the events from the moment they met Suzuran, all the way to the ambush in the catacombs on the outskirts of the capital. She described how Suzuran, seemingly out of nowhere, had intervened and protected Yuzuki, even staying with Yuzuki during a vulnerable moment. As the story unfolded, Akame's initial tension melted away. A genuine smile bloomed on her face as she heard of Suzuran's unexpected kindness.
"How long ago was this?" Akame asked, a newfound warmth in her voice.

"Well, we got here a week ago," Azure replied, scratching her head. "And they were heading off towards Opal's Reach, I believe. So maybe not too far behind us? Maybe another week or two?"

A glint of determination lit up Akame's eyes. "Well then, let's make sure this place is almost done by the time they get here. Alright everyone!" she called out, her voice ringing through the hall. Workers looked up from their tasks, attention drawn. "Let's get things finished up!"

A wave of renewed energy surged through the room. Everyone redoubled their efforts. Akame watched with pride, a sense of accomplishment washing over her. This bustling community, this haven she envisioned, was becoming a reality.

As everyone dispersed to their tasks, Akame stopped them one last time. "Everyone!" she called out, her voice booming with warmth. A hush fell over the room as they all turned back to face her. A genuine smile stretched across her face. "Welcome to the family," she declared.

For the next week, the village echoed with the sounds of diligent work. Everyone poured their efforts into finalizing the construction. The air crackled with a sense of shared purpose and excitement. They were building not just a village, but a home, and they couldn't wait to welcome the more members of their growing family.
