S1 - Chapter 7

Two weeks after Crystal and Ember joined Crimson Moon, preparations were underway for Suzuran and Akame's duel. Hana and Kurami bustled near the newly-finished barracks and training area outside the guild hall, preparing the grounds for the fight.

Yuzuki paced nervously, worry etching lines on her face. She wanted Suzuran to succeed, but fear of her getting hurt gnawed at her stomach.

Suzuran emerged from the guild hall and spotted Yuzuki's frantic pacing. "What's wrong?" she asked.

"My nerves!" Yuzuki confessed. "I want you to win, but I'm a mess."

Suzuran smiled wryly. "Me too. I'm ready, but my stomach's in knots. My sister's incredibly powerful, and I know I haven't seen her full potential. That's what scares me."

She scanned the gathered guild members. Kurohime, Kurami, and Fae would judge the duel, with Fae keeping track of points.

"Standard weapons are prohibited," Fae announced. Kurohime handed Suzuran and Akame wooden versions of their weapons, as the sisters took their stances.

"Prepare yourselves! The match begins in 3... 2... 1... GO!" Fae declared, marking the start of the fight.

Suzuran launched into a relentless offensive, utilizing her agility. Fae, Kurami, and Kurohime meticulously scored Suzuran's dominance. Her aggressive tactics racked up points as she outmaneuvered Akame's defenses. Suzuran's smaller stature granted her an edge in speed.

Direct hits earned full points, while scratches counted as half. Suzuran repeatedly grazed Akame, inching closer to landing a blow. A ‘deadly’ hit would instantly win her the match. Otherwise, she needed to outscore Akame. However, exceptional performance could lead to promotion based on skill alone, hence why many S-Rank testers went all out.

Suzuran continued her onslaught, peppering Akame with scratches. Then, she vanished from Akame's sight, poised to deliver a lethal attack from behind.

Everyone braced for the end, convinced Suzuran had secured victory. But in a shocking display of reflexes, Akame whipped her head around, effortlessly dodging the strike. Seizing the opportunity, Akame switched to a relentless offensive, mirroring Suzuran's earlier tactics.

Akame's blows landed with punishing force, a contrast to Suzuran's scratches. Suzuran grappled with the realization that her sister remained far stronger. If Akame wished, she could likely end the fight instantly. Suzuran had studied other S-Rank adventurers, but Akame's information with the adventurer’s guild was curiously blank.

Kurami and Hana, Akame's closest friends, watched in disbelief. "Hana," Kurami murmured, concern lacing her voice, "do you remember Akame being this strong when we were younger?"

Hana gritted her teeth, eyes glued to the fight. "No... I was the strongest. Akame was the weakest, despite her swordsmanship training. This... this is terrifying."

As the clash echoed through the village, a new person, unfamiliar to the villagers, approached the guild hall. They ascended the stairs, drawn by the commotion, and stumbled upon the duel between Akame and Suzuran.

Kurohime noticed the newcomer and waved them over. "Akiko," she greeted, "you've arrived at an interesting time."

"What's happening? Why are they fighting?" Akiko inquired.

"This is Suzuran's rank-up duel," Kurohime explained. "The guild paired her with her sister. Suzuran needs to beat or outscore Akame to rank up."

"Oh, how's the fight going? It seems like Akame has the upper hand right now, right?" Akiko asked.

Kurohime nodded. "Indeed. Akame turned the tables quickly and pressured Suzuran heavily. Suzuran started strong, but it appears Akame was waiting for the opportune moment."

"For what?" Akiko pressed.

"To break her spirit," Kurohime explained, "or at least, to see if it can withstand the pressure."

Akiko watched intently as the sisters clashed, their intense battle captivating the entire guild. A question formed in her mind.

"Who are all these new faces?" she asked.

"Guild members, all of whom joined within the last month," Kurohime replied.

"Oh, wow..." Akiko murmured, taking in the group. She noticed they were all women, strikingly attractive, but kept her gaze glued to Suzuran's movements as she had before when they last met.

Kurohime and Akiko refocused on the fight. Akame maintained the advantage, injuring Suzuran further. Suzuran finally countered, landing a blow that drew a bead of blood from Akame's cheek, a moment of surprise. Akame retaliated swiftly, sending Suzuran flying back with a kick.

Concern etched on Hana's face as she addressed Kurohime and Fae. "Isn't this getting a little excessive? They're sustaining significant injuries."

"Don't worry," Kurohime assured her. "I think Akame is merely testing Suzuran's limits. In turn, Suzuran strives to meet her expectations. I sense no malice or anger, just pure focus."

Yuzuki silently watched, her movements betraying her emotions. She cheered when Suzuran went on the offensive and grimaced with worry when she was on the defensive.

Suzuran landed another clean hit, this time on Akame's arm. As Suzuran prepared the finishing blow, a menacing look contorted Akame's face, something she had never seen before from her.

Panic seized Suzuran. Akame's aura, previously dormant, became oppressive, stifling Suzuran's breath. Despite the pressure, Suzuran powered through and attempted the attack. One moment, Akame wasn't even looking. The next, Suzuran blinked, and Akame was in her face, her grip tightening around Suzuran's wooden blade.

Akame crushed Suzuran's weapon and flung the other one out of the training area, leaving Suzuran weaponless. Akame pressed her attack, forcing Suzuran to rely solely on her agility to dodge. Suzuran desperately hoped her earlier points would secure victory.

A chance emerged. Suzuran swept Akame's legs, sending her tumbling. Akame recovered quickly, but the momentum shifted. The fight seemed decided. Akame's wooden blade hovered by Suzuran's neck, mirrored by Suzuran's hands tightening around her sister's throat. Panic gripped Hana and Kurami. Before the situation escalated further, Kurohime declared the duel over.

Akame's menacing expression vanished as quickly as it appeared, her emotions softening back to their usual state around her sister.

Suzuran's adrenaline subsided slowly as Yuzuki rushed to her side, offering support.

"Miss Akame, may we declare the winner?" Fae inquired.

Akame nodded.

Kurohime surveyed the scene before delivering her verdict. "I declare Suzuran the winner."

"I declare Akame the winner," Fae countered, a hint of sadness in her voice.

Kurami echoed Fae's decision: "Akame wins."

"Well then," Fae sighed, disappointment evident in her voice. "With a score of two to one, Akame is the winner. Unfortunately, that means Suzuran doesn't pass."

Suzuran's shoulders slumped in defeat as she started to walk past Yuzuki towards the guild hall.

Akame's voice interrupted the deliberations. "While I appreciate everyone's scores, I'd like to offer my own input."

Yuzuki, sensing Suzuran's dejection, stopped her and gently pulled her back. Akame approached them, her expression softened into a rare display of approval. Placing a hand on Suzuran's shoulder, she spoke.

"Suzu, you fought amazingly. You kept me on the defensive for a while, even landing some solid hits. I've only done three other duels, and all of them ended before blades even clashed. Do you know why?"

Suzuran shook her head, curiosity sparking in her eyes.

"Because they couldn't handle my aura," Akame revealed.

Suzuran's face lit up with realization. Now it all made sense. "I didn't think anyone else would notice," Akame admitted, "because I was focusing it solely on you. Throughout the fight, I was subtly releasing my aura at you." Akame smiled. "Not my full power, of course, but enough to immobilize a dragon or two without lifting a finger."

Gasps erupted from the assembled crowd. Even Kurohime couldn't hide a surprised look.

"It's true," Kurohime confirmed. "While I couldn't feel the full brunt of Akame's aura during the fight, I sensed its presence. And Fae?" she queried, a knowing smile playing on her lips. "Or were your legs trembling for another reason?"

Fae, caught off guard, admitted, "Miss Kurohime is correct. I... I felt something emanating from Miss Akame. It frightened me, but I knew my duty as a judge. I tried my best to persevere."

Akame turned back to Suzuran. "There's a reason the guild doesn't typically assign me to rank-up duels," she stated, another smile gracing her features. "But for once, with you, I can finally say the words I'd been waiting for."

Placing both hands on Suzuran's shoulders, Akame declared in a voice that resonated with authority, "Suzuran, under the authority of the Adventurer's Guild, you have passed this duel."

Suzuran's face erupted in a radiant smile as Akame pulled her into a warm embrace. Cheers erupted from the guild members, showering Suzuran with congratulations. Akiko, however, remained on the fringes, waiting for her own opportunity to express her well wishes. Unfortunately, before she could act, Yuzuki swept Suzuran into a tight hug, lifting her slightly off the ground, and planting a celebratory kiss on her lips.

Akiko felt a pang of heartbreak pierce her heart. The scene unfolding before her was a contrast to the future she had envisioned. Her ears drooped, and a wave of dejection washed over her as she slowly turned and began to descend the guild hall steps.

Kurohime, noticing the shift in Akiko's demeanor, decided to intervene and walk with her. As Suzuran, caught up in the euphoria of victory, turned towards where Kurohime had been standing, she noticed her walking away with someone. Her gaze landed on Akiko, whose drooping ears betrayed her sadness. A knot of understanding formed in Suzuran's stomach.

"A lot has transpired over the past month, little fox," Kurohime began, her voice gentle yet firm. "I understand your feelings for Suzuran from our previous encounter, but her life has taken an unexpected turn."
Akiko continued her descent, offering no response to Kurohime's words.

Undeterred, Kurohime pressed on. "Friendship is still a possibility. There's a chance you two could forge a wonderful bond. However, are you open to that?"

Akiko's voice, heavy with sorrow, replied, "I don't know..."

"Let me ask you this," Kurohime continued, her tone probing. "Did you admire Suzuran solely for her appearance, or was there a deeper connection that drew you to her? Perhaps it's selfish to feel entitled to a relationship based purely on initial attraction, especially without a true personal connection."

Akiko paused, Kurohime's words striking a chord deep within her. "That's a bit harsh... but I see your point," she finally admitted.

Placing a hand on Akiko's shoulder, Kurohime offered guidance. "Get to know Suzuran as a friend. If your feelings remain strong after that, so be it. However, you might discover that she wasn't meant for you, and perhaps fate has someone else in store, someone who might even surpass her in your affections."

Akiko's ears perked up, curiosity flickering in her eyes. "What do you mean?"

"Let's just say, Suzuran isn't the only one with potential here," Kurohime hinted. "This village and guild are flourishing. You might encounter someone who sweeps you off your feet in the future, someone who might even infatuate you more than Suzuran did."

Akiko offered a weak smile. "Thanks. I just need some time to process everything."

Kurohime let out a low purr, her movements turning predatory as she stopped in front of Akiko. She leaned in, revealing a generous amount of cleavage. "Perhaps that lover could be me, little fox," she teased, pulling her top down.

Akiko's face burned crimson as panic surged through her, and she blurted out, "I can't! My soul wouldn't survive a night with you!" bolting towards the nearby inn.

Kurohime laughed as she watched Akiko flee. As the sound of Akiko's frantic footsteps faded, she noticed Suzuran approaching from behind her.

"I feared this might happen," Suzuran admitted, her voice laced with sympathy. "After Yuzuki and I fell for each other..."

Kurohime offered a knowing smile. "Love, heartbreak, and happiness are all woven into the tapestry of life. They exist in a delicate balance, each pushing us towards a path we may not have foreseen. Akiko just needs to find hers."

Suzuran sighed, her gaze heavy with sympathy. "I know... but it bothers me to be the cause of her heartache."

"Talk to her," Kurohime suggested. "A heart-to-heart will clear the air. She'll find her true love, I have no doubt about that." A sly grin spread across Kurohime's face as she licked her lips suggestively. "Who knows, maybe she'll be drawn to me soon enough."

Suzuran, surprisingly, bristled with protectiveness. "Don't you dare take advantage of her vulnerability. Don't even think about it. Yuzuki already filled me in on what Akame hinted about you and Yukari the other night."

Kurohime chuckled, her voice dripping with amusement. "Oh, sweetheart, she craves that corruption, she just doesn't realize it yet." Her eyes gleamed with a seductive light. "As for Yukari and me, well, two older women simply appreciating each other's touch. Nothing more."

Suzuran sighed, momentarily at a loss for words. How to approach Akiko for a conversation was a dilemma that gnawed at her. With a shared look, they turned and headed back to the training area, where the celebration for Suzuran continued.

Later that night, the festivities were in full swing. The guild members and the new villagers who had settled in recently were gathered in a wide open area outside Hana's workshop, a space designated for such events. Scarlet and Azure had finished preparing a colossal feast, and everyone was eager to dig in.

Amidst the revelry, Akame and Kurohime managed to slip away from the party for a private conversation.
"It's incredible to see how much this place has grown in just a month," Akame remarked, a hint of pride in her voice.

"Indeed," Kurohime agreed. "We already have a few merchant families living here, and Fae mentioned an alchemist family moving in soon."

"Word of our guild is spreading," Akame added. "People are starting to discover our location, and trade has already begun. Fae's planning for this place was truly meticulous."

Just then, Fae approached them, "Miss Akame," she announced, "a raven should be arriving soon from the Adventurer's Guild to pick up the official documentation regarding Suzuran's promotion to S-Rank."

"Thank you for letting me know, Fae," Akame replied, her expression softening. "Why don't you go relax and enjoy the festivities?"

With a grateful nod, Fae rejoined the party, eager to socialize. As soon as she was gone, Kurohime leaned in.
"Akiko showed up today," she revealed.

Akame's eyes widened, "Oh? What happened?"

"Towards the end of your duel with Suzuran. Unfortunately, she witnessed Suzuran and Yuzuki's kiss. Needless to say, she was heartbroken and ready to pack her bags."

"You didn't let her leave, I assume?" Akame inquired.

Kurohime chuckled. "Of course not! I suggested she talk to Suzuran, see if they can at least be friends."
"Good call," Akame agreed. "It's what's best for her."

"What about you, fearless leader?" Kurohime pressed, her voice dripping with playful intent. "Have you ever dated, or do you even intend to?"

Akame's response was flat and emotionless. "My love is for my friends and family. I have no room for anything beyond that."

"Not even a single night with yours truly?" Kurohime purred, her voice brushing against Akame's ear. She leaned in further, her body pressing against Akame's.

Akame didn't flinch. She simply placed a hand on Kurohime's face and gently pushed her back. Kurohime pouted playfully, as she always did when rejected.

"No," Akame repeated, her voice devoid of any emotion.

"Why not?" Kurohime pressed, genuinely confused.

Akame sighed, a flicker of sadness crossing her features. "That part of me... it's gone. A void. Missing. It disappeared a long time ago, it died with my younger self."

The playful glint in Kurohime's eyes vanished. Akame's honesty struck a chord, and Kurohime realized she wasn't just putting on a show. Just like Akame had said, a part of her truly seemed missing.

"So, if Akiko stays," Akame continued, changing the subject, "what do you think about her?"

"She'd be a valuable asset to the guild," Kurohime conceded, "although her emotions might get the better of her right now. But I have faith she'll overcome that. She seems like a strong little fox."

"Just don't corrupt her," Akame pleaded with a hint of amusement, turning to rejoin the party.

Kurohime burst out laughing. "Your sister said the same thing!" she called after Akame.

As Akame disappeared into the crowd, Kurohime grinned to herself. "I won't corrupt her... much," she muttered under her breath, a mischievous glint returning to her eyes.

Kurohime looked around and noticed Akiko perched by the window in her inn room. Akiko’s heart ached, a dull throb that mirrored the festive lights flickering outside. Doubts gnawed at her. Had her feelings for Suzuran been genuine, pure love, or something else? Kurohime's words echoed in her mind, replaying alongside the agonizing image of Suzuran and Yuzuki's kiss.

A sudden growl from her stomach interrupted her emotional turmoil. Food. She needed to eat.

Just then, a soft knock startled her. "Who is it?" she called out hesitantly.

"Thought you might be hungry, little fox," came Kurohime's playful voice. "I brought you some food. Try to have a good night."

Akiko's ears twitched. She cautiously approached the door and peeked out. A plate of delicious-looking food sat outside. Relief washed over her.

Returning to the window, she picked up a biscuit, and a small note fluttered down to the plate. Unfolding it, she saw Suzuran's name scrawled across the top, requesting to talk in the morning.

Akiko sighed. A part of her welcomed the chance to speak with Suzuran, but the hurt still lingered. Folding the note, she forced herself to eat, the food momentarily distracting her from the sadness.

The next morning, Akiko found herself waiting on the outskirts of the village, sitting on a low stone wall. Nervousness gnawed at her as she awaited Suzuran's arrival. When footsteps approached from behind, she didn't dare turn, already knowing who it was.

Suzuran sat beside her. Though hesitant, Akiko finally looked up. Happiness battled with the remnants of heartbreak in her eyes.

Suzuran, sensing Akiko's emotional state, spoke first.

"Thank you for meeting me. I wanted to apologize for hurting you," she said sincerely. "My feelings for Yuzuki... it just developed naturally. It wasn't my intention to cause you any pain."

Suzuran repeated her words from before, her voice filled with genuine regret. "I want to say it again: your strength, intelligence, and beauty are undeniable. Life just took me on a different path."

Akiko's ears perked up at the familiar compliment. "You don't need to apologize," she said, her voice thick with emotion. "I was the one who set myself up for this. Seeing your affection for someone else... It hurts. But I have no right to feel that way. There was no connection between us, not like the one you have with her, I guess."

Akiko wiped away a stray tear. "Maybe things could have been different if I'd been braver, if I'd made a proper move on you..." Her voice trailed off, a mix of regret and uncertainty swirling within her.

"Akiko," Suzuran said gently, "I can't say for sure. Perhaps everything happens for a reason. Maybe our paths weren't meant to intertwine romantically. But I do believe we were meant to meet."

Suzuran extended a hand towards Akiko, a warm smile gracing her lips. "I think we were meant to be friends."
Akiko looked up at Suzuran's smile, its genuineness melting the last vestiges of her heartbreak. With a shaky smile, she took Suzuran's hand, letting her pull her to her feet.

"Would you still consider joining our guild?" Suzuran asked hopefully. "I'd love to have you here."

Akiko hesitated, then offered a small smile. "I'll think about it."

Suddenly, a loud growl erupted from Akiko's stomach, shattering the moment. Suzuran giggled.

"Well then," she said, "how about we grab some breakfast with the guild first? There is food I know a hungry fox would love to eat."

Suzuran led the way back to the guild hall, Akiko following with a newfound lightness in her step. Perhaps friendship was a good place to start after all.

The aroma of a delicious breakfast greeted Akiko and Suzuran as they entered the guild hall. The only members seated at the dining table were Fae, Kurohime, Yukari, Yuzuki, and Ember. Scarlet and Azure bustled around, adding platters of food to the already impressive spread.

"Where is everyone else?" Suzuran inquired.

"Miss Akame and Miss Kurami are on their way to Opal's Reach," Fae replied. "They mentioned something about moving Grammy to the village. They should be back in a couple of weeks."

Kurohime chimed in, "Hana and Kaori are headed to the capital to deliver an order placed by the Adventurer's Guild headquarters. They'll be gone a little longer than a week."

Ember mumbled through a mouthful of food, "Crystal's still asleep, as usual."

Suzuran gently nudged Akiko forward. "This is Akiko," she announced. "She's new here and is considering joining the guild."

The group offered Akiko warm smiles and greetings. Akiko settled into a seat next to Ember, while Suzuran returned to Yuzuki's side.

"Um... is it alright if I grab something to eat?" Akiko asked hesitantly.

Azure, who was placing a fresh stack of pancakes on the table, looked at Akiko, "Of course! Eat up!"

Akiko's eyes widened at the bounty before her. With a sheepish grin, she piled her plate high, sampling a bit of everything. Her appetite was impressive, as she devoured her first helping and immediately reached for more. Azure, witnessing Akiko's formidable appetite, scurried back to the kitchen, a touch of panic in her eyes. Scarlet, already prepping lunch, could be heard offering her assistance.

The others watched with amusement, having never seen Azure flustered over feeding just one person. Akiko, however, seemed oblivious, a vibrant smile gracing her face. It was clear she was enjoying the friendly atmosphere of the guild.

Occasionally, her gaze would flicker towards Suzuran, and their eyes would meet for a fleeting moment. A hint of sadness still lingered in Akiko's eyes, a reminder of the morning's conversation. Nevertheless, things seemed to be moving in a positive direction.

After breakfast, the group dispersed for their various tasks. Ember set off for a walk around the village, eager to lend a hand with any remaining construction projects or assist with the newly started farming endeavors - activities she and Crystal excelled at before their adventuring days after leaving Draconia.
Fae and Yuzuki joined Yukari in helping her sort out a recent delivery of books, scrolls and tomes. Scarlet continued prepping lunch, while Azure, having recovered from her initial panic, tackled cleaning the dining table and began preparations for dinner.

Silence settled between Akiko and Suzuran after they finished helping clean up. The quiet stretched, a touch awkward, until Suzuran finally broke it.

"Akiko," she began tentatively, "would you be interested in exploring the outskirts of the village with me? A walk might be nice."

Akiko readily agreed, and for the next hour, they strolled through the village, greeting the new settlers and their families. Suzuran noticed a spark return to Akiko's eyes as she interacted with the villagers, a similar enthusiasm Suzuran had witnessed in Mahina Village.

"So, Akiko," Suzuran began, "have you given any more thought to joining the guild? It's still early, of course, but you seem to be having a good time here."

Akiko paused, considering her answer. "To be honest, Suzuran," she admitted, "the main reason I came here was to be near you."

Suzuran's lips curved into a sympathetic smile. "And now you are, just not in the way you envisioned, right?" she teased playfully. "Who knew love could bring the mighty guardian of Mahina Village to her knees?"

A blush crept up Akiko's cheeks, but Suzuran's lighthearted tone put her at ease. It was clear Suzuran wasn't mocking her, but rather pointing out how Akiko's feelings had defeated her.

"So, what do you think I should do?" Akiko asked, a touch of vulnerability in her voice.

Suzuran met her gaze with sincerity. "I think you should stay. Like I said before, I'd love to have you here as a friend. It might take some time for your feelings to subside, but I truly believe our friendship could be something special."

Akiko's smile returned, brighter and more genuine this time. "Alright then," she declared. "I'll join the guild and stay."

A note of concern flickered across Suzuran's face. "Just be careful around Kurohime," she cautioned. "Romance with her might not end well for you."

Akiko laughed, the tension from earlier dissipating.  "Oh, trust me, I learned that lesson the first night I met her!” A mischievous glint entered Akiko's eyes. "Though, I have to say, her body is…amazing, her hips… and those breasts..." she trailed off, a suggestive smile playing on her lips.

Suzuran couldn't help but laugh, despite the slight annoyance at Akiko's ogling. It seemed Akiko was truly back to her usual self.

Akiko and Suzuran continued their walk, the vibrant chatter slowly fading as they reached the village's southeastern edge. Suddenly, a faint yelping sound pierced the air, drawing their attention towards the nearby forest.

"Was that a wolf?" Suzuran asked, her brow furrowed with concern.

Akiko's ears twitched, picking up the distinct sounds. "It is," she confirmed, "and it sounds like it's fighting with something. We should check it out."

Akiko and Suzuran followed the sound of yelps deeper into the forest, their pace quickening with each passing moment. As they emerged into a clearing, they were met with a sight that left them speechless. A lone wolf snarled and snapped its jaws at a woman standing defiantly completely naked. Despite her lack of clothing, the woman's expression wasn't one of fear, but rather surprise at the newcomers. She appeared to be in her early-thirties, with a mature beauty that vaguely echoed Kurohime's features.

Without hesitation, Suzuran and Akiko drew their weapons, ready to intervene. "We're here to help!" Suzuran called out. "Please, get back, we'll keep you safe."

Suzuran turned back to face the standoff between Akiko and the wolf, only to find them already locked in combat. Akiko seemed hesitant to inflict serious harm, focusing on forcing the wolf to retreat. Suddenly, the wolf's fur crackled with energy, its form shimmering as it absorbed elemental power from the surrounding area.

"An elemental wolf!" Akiko exclaimed, "Tell the woman to run, this fight could get messy!"

Suzuran spun around, her warning dying on her lips as she discovered the woman was already gone. "The woman disappeared! I don't know where she went!"

Akiko's brow furrowed in confusion. "Well, at least we can focus on the wolf now," she muttered, resuming her fight.

Minutes passed, Akiko's movements displaying a clear reluctance to deliver a fatal blow. Finally, she decided to end the fight. A powerful kick sent the wolf sprawling, a yelp of pain escaping its throat. Exhausted and injured, the creature lay whimpering, unable to rise.

Akiko approached the downed wolf, preparing to deliver the final blow. But before she could act, a curious sight stopped her. An adorable slime oozed its way between Akiko and the wolf, effectively preventing her from attacking.

"Is that a slime?" Suzuran gasped, hurrying over to get a closer look.

Akiko crouched in front of the unusual creature. "It certainly is, but this one seems different," she observed. "Regular slimes are usually quite aggressive. This one seems to be… protecting the wolf?"

Akiko extended a tentative hand towards the slime. "Excuse me, little one," she began gently, "would you mind moving so we can finish this wolf off?"

The slime responded by pulsating in a way that vaguely resembled a head shake.  Akiko and Suzuran exchanged astonished glances.

"Is this slime... intelligent?" Suzuran said, her voice filled with wonder.

Akiko's sigh echoed through the clearing. "Well, little slime," she began, a hint of exasperation in her voice, "what exactly are you planning?"

The slime's response was unexpected. It pulsed and stretched, enveloping the injured wolf in its gelatinous form. Akiko and Suzuran watched, apprehension twisting their features. Was the slime devouring the wolf?

Just as Akiko readied her weapon, Suzuran stopped her. "Wait, look."

Instead of being devoured, the wolf's wounds were visibly healing as the slime's form receded. The wolf, revitalized, pushed itself up, though it remained seated in a submissive posture. The slime then turned its beady eyes towards Akiko and Suzuran.

"Did you heal this wolf, little one?" Suzuran inquired cautiously. "Why would you do that?"

To their utter astonishment, the slime spoke, its voice a raspy but surprisingly clear child-like whisper.

"Wolf... friend," it rasped. The wolf let out a low, confirmatory howl.

"What about the woman you were with earlier?" Suzuran continued. "Were you… attacking her?"

The slime seemed to ponder this question for a moment before replying, "Also… friend."

Suzuran glanced at Akiko, a look of bewilderment etched on her face. "This is beyond strange," Akiko admitted. "A talking intelligent slime befriending a magical wolf and a human... unheard of."

"Where did the woman disappear to, little one?" Akiko asked, hoping the slime could shed some light on the situation.

"Safe... back... soon," the slime replied.

Suzuran and Akiko exchanged a confused look. "So, what do we do with them?" Akiko questioned. "Do we just trust them and head back to the village?"

As if on cue, the wolf dipped its head and nudged the slime. The slime oozed up the wolf's back, settling comfortably on its fur. This unexpected display left the girls speechless.

"Well, I guess that answers our question," Suzuran said with a nervous chuckle. "Let's get back to the village, then."

On their way back, Suzuran and Akiko discussed keeping an eye out for the woman, offering her shelter in the village if needed. They turned to see the wolf and slime following along, a sight that defied everything they thought they knew.

"Um, excuse me, little one," Akiko began tentatively, "why are you following us?"

The slime pulsed in a way that resembled a nod. "Friends?" it gurgled in its adorable voice.

Akiko and Suzuran shared a resigned sigh. "Alright then," Akiko conceded, "we'll be your friends… for now."

They continued walking, the wolf and slime trailing behind them as if they were old companions. As they approached the village, Yukari, who happened to be outside, spotted them.

"What in the world did you two bring back?" she asked, her eyes widening in surprise as she walked towards them.

Akiko and Suzuran launched into their story, recounting the encounter with the naked woman, the elemental wolf, and the talking slime. Yukari listened intently, a thoughtful expression on her face.

"Well," she finally said, "this is certainly… unique. For now, they can stay in the new garden area behind my library. It was just finished yesterday."

The slime and wolf perked up at this suggestion. They both followed after Yukari as she led them towards the library, leaving Akiko and Suzuran to head back to the guild hall, utterly exhausted from their eventful day.

Later that night, while most of the village slept soundly, Akiko lay restless in her bed. She had undressed completely to stay cool, the sheets barely covering her bare skin. Her body shifted and turned, seeking comfort in the coolness of the night air against her body.

With a sigh, she sat up, letting the sheets fall away, exposing her full figure to the darkness of the room. She dressed slowly, feeling slightly more at ease, she made her way downstairs, hoping to find someone awake to distract her.

As she arrived, the murmur of conversations drifted from Yukari’s library. Suzuran and Yuzuki's voices mingled with Yukari's, who seemed to be questioning them about their journey together and the assassin's guild. Fae sat at the dining table, hunched over paperwork, eating a late dinner courtesy of Scarlet.

"Miss Fae," Akiko announced, "I can't seem to sleep. I think I'll take a walk around the village for a bit."

Fae glanced up at Akiko. "Do be safe, Miss Akiko. I'll wait until you return before I head to bed."

Akiko nodded and ventured out into the village. As she strolled through the moonlit streets, she couldn't help but be impressed by the rapid development. Crystal had mentioned the village being recently built, which aligned with the timeline of Suzuran and Akame's departure from Mahina Village. Most of the houses had been completed within a day or two, the efficiency of the construction crews Akame had hired was amazing. Apparently, Akame had them well-compensated and they were even offered temporary housing within the village.

Reaching the village entrance where she'd met Suzuran earlier this morning, Akiko decided to check on the farm Ember and Crystal had been helping with. But as the fields came into view, a peculiar sight made her stop in her tracks.

"What in the world..." she breathed, her voice barely a whisper. "The wolf from earlier... and that's the naked lady again!"

The wolf and woman frolicked in the moonlight. The same activity Akiko and Suzuran had apparently intruded on earlier.

Without hesitation, Akiko sprinted back to the guild hall, bursting through the door and startling Fae, who had been nodding off at the dining table.

“Oh... Um... Miss Akiko! Is everything alright?” Fae asked, jolted awake by Akiko’s sudden entrance.
But Akiko didn’t respond, her mind racing. She dashed past Fae, heading straight for Suzuran. “Suzu! You won’t believe this!” she exclaimed, breathless.

Yukari, Suzuran, and Yuzuki turned to her, curiosity and concern etched on their faces.

“The naked lady is here in the village at the farms, and the wolf is playing with her!” Akiko gasped out.

Suzuran’s eyes widened in shock. Without a word, she followed Akiko out of the room. Yuzuki looked at Yukari, confusion clear in her eyes. “Naked... woman?” she repeated. They quickly followed behind, eager to understand what was happening.

As Akiko and Suzuran approached the farm, they saw the woman from before. Akiko called out, trying to get her attention, but the woman panicked and dropped down into the crops, hiding. When Akiko and Suzuran arrived at the spot where the woman had been, she was gone. The wolf remained nearby, the small slime perched on its head like a crown.

Akiko approached the wolf and slime, her curiosity piqued. “Little slime, we just saw the woman. Where did she go?”

“Scared… hiding… safe,” the slime replied, its voice as endearing as ever.

Suzuran stepped up beside Akiko, her concern evident. “Why is she scared?”

“Might… hurt… friend,” the slime answered, its voice tinged with worry.

Akiko knelt down, her tone gentle and reassuring. “We wouldn’t hurt her. We just want to make sure she’s okay. In fact, we want to meet her.”

At that moment, Yukari and Yuzuki arrived, standing behind Suzuran and Akiko.

“What in the world got into you two?” Yuzuki asked, her confusion clear. “What’s this all about a naked woman?”

Suzuran quickly recounted the story for Yuzuki, just as she had for Yukari earlier, explaining about the naked woman and the wolf playing in the field.

Yukari, intrigued, walked over to the slime and knelt in front of it. “Were you playing in the field, little slime?”

“Friend!” the slime replied enthusiastically.

“What’s your name?” Yukari asked, her voice soft and kind.

The slime seemed puzzled. “Name?”

“Yes, your name, so we can call you by it,” Yukari clarified.

The slime pondered for a moment, then appeared to remember something. “Gel...ina,” it replied.

Yukari chuckled softly. “Well, that’s an interesting name for a slime.” The slime quivered slightly, seeming a bit offended.

“You can stop pretending to talk improperly,” Yukari said with a knowing smile. “I’ve known many slimes in my time that could speak intelligently, and I can sense that in you, Miss Gelina.”

Suddenly, Gelina’s demeanor shifted. She realized her act was up. “I wondered how long I could keep this charade around such powerful beings,” she said, now speaking fluently with a mature, sultry feminine voice. “I thought I had a chance once that monstrosity left earlier.”

Akiko, Yuzuki, and Suzuran stood in awe, processing the unexpected revelation.

“Who is the monstrous one?” Akiko asked, her curiosity piqued.

“The lady with the single red horn,” Gelina replied.

“My sister?” Suzuran asked, clearly taken aback.

“Yes, her aura keeps most of the monsters away from here now. Everything is afraid of her,” Gelina explained.

Yukari considered Gelina’s words, intrigued by their implications. Suzuran, however, laughed. “Monsters thinking she’s a monster. Now that’s some irony.”

“Come along, Miss Gelina. I think we have a great deal to talk about,” Yukari said, extending her hand for Gelina to hop onto.

Gelina oozed her way onto Yukari’s hand, and they all returned to the guild hall, the wolf following closely behind.

With the whole group now gathered in Yukari’s library, the wolf was not permitted inside and had to wait at the doorway, whining softly.

Gelina’s slime body glanced towards the wolf. “Nova, it's okay. You can lay down.” The wolf, upon hearing her soothing voice, stopped whining and lay down just outside the door.

“Nova is its name?” Akiko asked, intrigued.

“Yes, that is his name,” Gelina confirmed. “He has been my friend for many years now.”

“So, Miss Gelina, what brings you to this area?” Yukari inquired, her tone both curious and cautious.

“Miss Yukari, let me turn your question back to you all instead. What brings you to live in this area?” Gelina asked, her beady eyes taking on a serious glint, unusual for a slime. “You scared off most of the dangerous monsters, so I assumed you all were monsters as well, just more powerful,” Gelina said.

“We have no evil intentions, if that’s what you are asking. Are there friendly monsters in the area still?” Yukari responded.

“Yes, I’ve been their caretaker for a long time,” Gelina confirmed.

“Have you always lived here?” Suzuran asked.

“I’ve been in this forest for many, many years, but long ago, I did live with some humans,” Gelina said.

“How old are you?” Yuzuki asked, her curiosity evident.

“Hmmm, I think that question has two answers,” Gelina replied. “As you see me now, I’m about 652 years old.”

Suddenly, Gelina’s slime features began to shift, forming into a human. It was the same naked woman from before.

“This form, though, is about 30 years old, I believe,” Gelina said.

All the women in the room, except for Yukari, were stunned. Suzuran and Yuzuki were taken aback, while Akiko’s eyes widened with both surprise and lust. Her gaze traced over Gelina’s voluptuous figure, lingering on her large breasts, wide hips, shapely legs, and seductive face.

Suzuran noticed Akiko’s trance and pinched her, snapping her out of it. Akiko yelped, pouting as Suzuran gave her a blank stare.

Gelina, sensing Akiko’s lingering gaze, covered her breasts with one arm and her crotch with the other, feigning embarrassment. “Please… your wandering eyes, I can feel them doing naughty things to me,” she said innocently.

“Miss Gelina…” Yukari interjected, clearly exasperated with Gelina’s charade. “I know you can create clothing for yourself. Please do so, since I know you are doing this on purpose.”

Gelina turned to Yukari with a pout. “You’re no fun. I had at least one of them lusting over my body,” she said, casting a seductive glance at Akiko, who licked her lips involuntarily.

With a playful sigh, Gelina’s slime reappeared, creating very generic cloth clothing that barely covered her, as if she was wearing clothes not meant for her size or features. “Is this better?” Gelina asked, looking at Yukari for approval.

Yukari nodded, confirming it was fine, but then she put her face in her palm. “Kurohime is going to go crazy, seeing we have another woman with a body that competes with ours.”

“Alright, everyone, it’s time to call it a night. Gelina and I will stay a bit longer to discuss her accommodations,” Yukari declared calmly.

Yuzuki and Suzuran nodded in agreement, visibly weary from the evening’s events. They held hands and headed upstairs to Suzuran’s room, ready to sleep for the night.

Akiko hesitated, concern etched on her face as she glanced at Yukari. “Will you be alright, Miss Yukari?”

Yukari smiled reassuringly. “Yes, dear. Gelina is harmless, I can sense that.”

With a nod, Akiko bid Yukari goodnight and made her way upstairs. Once she was sure Akiko had gone, Yukari gestured to Nova, silently instructing him to come inside and settle by the door. Nova obeyed, moving silently across the room and curling up by the entrance. Yukari then gestured with her hand, conjuring a spectral hand that gently closed the door without a sound.

Gelina observed Yukari’s display of her spectral ability with curiosity, settling herself comfortably on a nearby chair and crossing her legs. “Have you died, Miss Yukari?” she inquired casually.

“I did, briefly. But that’s not our focus right now,” Yukari replied with a faint smile, her tone turning serious.

“Miss Gelina, I’d like to revisit something you mentioned earlier.”

Gelina tilted her head slightly, intrigued. “What is it?”

“You mentioned the red-horned one being a monstrosity. What did you mean by that?” Yukari probed gently, her curiosity piqued.

Gelina’s demeanor shifted subtly, sensing Yukari’s intent. “In my 652 years of existence, I’ve encountered an aura like hers only once before.”

“What was it?” Yukari asked, leaning forward with interest.

“I remember during my time among humans, a scholar I knew referred to such beings as Harbingers,” Gelina revealed.

Yukari’s eyes widened, memories of ancient texts she had studied, dating back over a hundred years before she was cursed, suddenly resurfaced. They indeed spoke of powerful beings known as Harbingers.

“Since we moved here, have you always sensed her aura like that?” Yukari inquired, her curiosity lingering.

“It was only exceptionally strong for a brief moment, but it was potent enough to unsettle every creature in the vicinity of this village,” Gelina replied, settling comfortably.

Yukari recalled retrieving her books from the ruined assassin’s guild earlier with Akame and Kurohime. Determined to delve into them that night, she made a mental note to start her research.

“What about your human form? How did you come to acquire it? Can you assume other forms? I've read that some slimes can mimic those they've consumed,” Yukari asked, her tone reflecting both curiosity and intrigue.

“I can only take on female forms, given that I am a female slime. However, I choose to maintain only this particular form and have no intention of assuming any others,” Gelina explained firmly.

Yukari raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Why is that?”

“This woman whose form I now inhabit was my closest friend during my time among humans. I made a promise to her,” Gelina replied, her expression conveying a hint of melancholy.

“May I ask what happened?” Yukari prompted gently, sensing Gelina’s sadness.

Gelina sighed softly, recounting the tale of Geline, her friend from over three centuries ago. She described how Geline, a traveling healer, had protected her from other monsters and cared for her despite her initial weakness. Gelina had traveled alongside Geline, learning much about the world and forming a deep bond.
One fateful day, their journey was interrupted by a Minotaur attack. The beast, inexplicably aggressive, targeted their cart along a merchant’s path. It spared Gelina, viewing her as a fellow monster, but viciously injured Geline. Gelina managed to divert the Minotaur's attention and drive it away, but Geline's injuries proved fatal.

Returning to Geline’s side, Gelina realized her friend was dying. Aware of Gelina's ability to absorb both monsters and humans, Geline made a desperate request: for Gelina to absorb her so that she could live on through her. Gelina hesitated but ultimately agreed, knowing it was her friend’s wish. As Gelina absorbed Geline, she gained not only her memories and skills but also a newfound intelligence and desires.

“It was a way for Geline to live on through me, and I gained a new existence,” Gelina explained softly. “But in return for this gift of life, I promised her that she would be the only person I would ever absorb.”

Yukari listened intently, her mind grappling with the implications of Gelina’s story. The bond between them was not merely one of symbiosis but also of profound friendship and loyalty.

"What about you always being naked? Would your friend have approved of that with her body?" Yukari asked.

"Oh, that's actually how she preferred it. Whenever we were alone, she enjoyed being naked," Gelina chuckled.

Yukari then inquired if Gelina intended to stay in the village with them. Gelina mentioned she would consider it after meeting the red-horned one in the coming weeks, but for now, she and Nova would reside in the garden.

"We could provide you with a room. Since you have healing abilities, you might find the infirmary we're setting up downstairs suitable," Yukari suggested.

"Are you suggesting I help heal the residents here while in human form, Miss Yukari?" Gelina asked, clearly understanding Yukari's implication.

"Don't you think it's a good plan? It would give you a chance to see what we're about," Yukari proposed.

"As long as Nova can stay with me in the infirmary, I’ll agree," Gelina haggled.

"That's acceptable. However, Akame will have the final say about your presence, considering it was her aura you felt," Yukari explained.

"Speaking of memories, do your memories of your friend influence your… sexual preferences?" Yukari asked with a suggestive look.

"In my human form, I do feel urges, but I'm sorry, Miss Yukari, this form is attracted to men, not women," Gelina clarified, disappointing Yukari.

"Well, luckily for us, we don't have any male guild members yet," Yukari chuckled. "If you engage in anything sexual in your human form, please keep it discreet and away from Akame."

"Why?" Gelina asked, puzzled.

"She already has her hands full with some of us women in the guild and our sexual adventures. I don’t think she needs to know about any others," Yukari explained.

Gelina chuckled, "In that case, Miss Yukari, I'll excuse myself for the night. I'll be in the garden if you need me. I'll remain in my human form starting tomorrow while in the village unless requested otherwise."

Gelina left Yukari’s library with Nova following closely behind, heading outside as she reverted into her slime form. Yukari then walked over to her private collection, still nestled in crates. She shuffled through several books until she found the one she remembered from the night she was ambushed. Flipping quickly through the pages, she finally stumbled upon a section that looked familiar.

She paced the room, reading aloud to herself. “Harbingers, as we can tell, are god-like beings chosen by Aelyndra, our planet. These beings are apparently required to keep balance in this world, even if they are good or evil, such as disease balancing health,” Yukari read aloud.

Her expression changed as she turned the page, finding most of it had faded over time or been eaten by insects. Only certain words were still legible: "Ten," "Monsters," "Humanoids," and one final line that particularly caught her interest: “Always a harbinger until death.” She closed the book, deciding to continue searching through the other crates.

As the night passed into morning, Yukari's thoughts centered on one objective until Akame returned from her journey: understanding the harbingers. Did they still exist? What was the connection between Akame's aura and the harbingers that Gelina had sensed? These questions swirled in her mind, demanding answers as soon as possible.
